What a Ride! AdvisorShares at Cycle for Survival

What a Ride! AdvisorShares at Cycle for Survival

Equinox gym in Bethesda blazed orange (a color close to our hearts) on March 6th for the 10th Annual Cycle for Survival. The day was filled with upbeat music, inspirational speeches, power sprints, and LOTS of camaraderie. There was extra excitement when we learned that CFS had crossed $100 million in all-time fundraising that week! AdvisorShares’ team, AlphaSquad, took to the bikes at 1:00 with lead-off rider James Fifield who commented “Hearing the stories from the survivors reminded me why I signed up. Their strength, their determination and their passion, not only the organization and event, but giving back to those that are currently fighting cancer. It was a powerful and moving experience.” Next on the bike was team captain, Nancy Fitzgerald, who was extremely impressed with the volunteers. “I did this event twice this weekend with two different teams, one in DC on Friday night, and one here in Bethesda Sunday afternoon. I can’t get over that most of these amazingly energetic volunteers are the same ones....

AdvisorShares Turns Our Attention to Rare Cancer Research – CYCLE FOR SURVIVAL

AdvisorShares Turns Our Attention to Rare Cancer Research – CYCLE FOR SURVIVAL

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a “rare cancer” is one with a prevalence of fewer than 200,000 affected individuals in the United States. But when you put all of these rare cancer types together, they account for approximately half of all cancer diagnoses. Research on many rare cancers is drastically underfunded, often leaving patients with limited or no treatment options. Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center—the world’s oldest and largest private cancer center—is committed to changing that reality. Cycle for Survival‘s indoor team cycling events raise funds that are critical for rare cancer research. 100% of every donation to Cycle for Survival is directly allocated to research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center within six months of the events. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of participants, donors, and supporters, Cycle for Survival has raised over $80 million for rare cancer research, and funded 100+ clinical trials and research studies. On Sunday, March 6th from 1:00pm to 5:00pm AdvisorShares very own team, AlphaSquad, will Join the Battle! We are...

If Corporate America Is Investing in Sustainability, Then Why Aren’t You?

If Corporate America Is Investing in Sustainability, Then Why Aren’t You?

By: Michael Marinus Young, AdvisorShares Institutional Consultant   “Thanks, but I don’t believe in that stuff…” While traveling the country this fall, that was the response we received from some financial advisors after the introduction of an investment that focuses on sustainability. When pressed to explain, the common refrain was “ESG or SRI investments underperform, and I want my clients invested in the best companies.” Unfortunately, thirty seconds in an elevator or hallway is not enough time to build the case for sustainability. But here on AlphaBaskets, we’re afforded the space and time to better explain why Sustainability should matter to them, and you. And rather than start from scratch, let us lead you to a recent piece from Fast Company: http://www.fastcoexist.com/3036010/why-is-goldman-sachs-advocating-for-sustainability. If “Accenture, Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, Harvard Business School, McKinsey & Company, and PricewaterhouseCoopers have released data-driven case studies, global surveys, and exhaustive reports offering compelling proof that using business as a force for good is also good for business,” then how could a financial professional ignore the...

If Clients Ask About Impact Investing, Will You Have an Answer?

If Clients Ask About Impact Investing, Will You Have an Answer?

By Roger Nusbaum, AdvisorShares ETF Strategist As we’ve looked at in the last couple of posts, the nature of investing is always changing. Changes come from market conditions, access to investment strategies (mostly though ETFs) that were not previously accessible and from client inquiry. No advisor wants to appear unprepared when a client about some strategy or investing idea. One relatively new investment concept that will gain more traction is the idea of impact investing, also known as sustainable investing. This will be unfamiliar to many advisors but is gaining traction. To this end Morgan Stanley created the Institute for Sustainable Investing which seeks to “mobilize capital to meet pressing global challenges.” Taking the idea a little further, capital can be deployed across all asset classes, not just equities, with the objective of making a positive impact socially, environmentally or both while also seeking a strong risk adjusted return for investors. Where concerns over things like the wealth gap and the fortunes of the 1% have gained mainstream awareness,...
